7zip Scenic by laushung 7zip Scenic by laushung
7zip Scenic

Building on the fantastic library SevenZipSharp by Markhor and utilizing the excellent zip program 7zip, I introduce 7zip for Windows 7.

Now 7zip can run beside programs like Windows Live Mail and Windows Explorer and look like a native application.

While this is still a working beta, it should be usable for your daily needs. Some features are not finished and some are still in testing but it'll zip / unzip your files just fine.

Some things that are still on the to do list include:

- Creating self extracting zip files

- Right-click menu for 7zip in Windows Explorer's context menu.

NOTE!!! .net 4 Framework MUST be installed in order for the application to run. Please go here [link] if you need to install it.

Version log:

0.4.0.15 - Apr. 20 2011

- The check for password protected archives I added in the last update didn't work exactly as I had planned. This is now fixed.

0.4.0.15 - Apr. 20 2011

- Fixed a problem with 7zip Scenic not properly remembering when a user selected "Every Week" or "Every Month" in the Check Frequency menu.

- Added a check for password protected archives when opening. If the user tries to open an archive that is password protected, it will now ask for the password before trying to open the archive.

- Added the 'Properties' button. Clicking will now show the properties of the currently open archive.

- Added the 'Diagnostics' button. Clicking will now check to see if the currently open archive is valid.

0.4.0.0 - Mar. 5 2011

- Added support for adding / deleting files from archive without extracting first.

- 7zip Scenic should now associate with .7z, .rar and .zip files automatically.

- Fixed a few things and refined the update window to include download information.

- Added taskbar support to display progress while extracting / compressing.

- Full support for opening files by double-clicking from Explorer.

- Added the ability to drop files the user wants to compress from multiple directories. Hold control while dropping files to append to the current archive.

0.3.0.6 - Feb. 20 2011

- Added support for extracting / compressing ecomic formats (.cbr and .cbz).

- Fixed the Save dialog. It should now be a proper save dialog instead of an open dialog.

- Added the ability to manually check for updates and to set the update frequency (At start, every day, every week and every month).

- Fixed the missing icons in the jumplist.

- Started to add preliminary code for file associations (this option is still disabled though).

0.3 - Now also available from [link] which will automatically update 7zip for you. No need to re-check / re-download the whole package every time there's an update.

- Completed the treeview. Double-clicking a folder will automatically select every file found in that folder.

- Added Quick View feature. Either double-click the item or click the 'Quick View' button in the ribbon and 7zip will automatically open that file using the default application.

- Added 'Recently Used Folders' feature. 7zip will now remember the folders you've used to extract your archives to and offer them in the drop down menu for easier extracting.

- Fixed an issue with icons in details view.

- Fixed a few other bugs / not-quite-finished things.

0.2.0.5 - Includes a Click-Once installer which should now allow the program to run properly.

0.2 - Initial release (pulled due to not functioning properly)

The complete source will be available for download as soon as we get a stable release in order to comply with LGPL licensing.

Special thanks to Markhor for his SeveZipSharp library and FediaFedia for the icon.

My Dropbox links were getting hammered to the point Dropbox suspended all of my links. Since Dropbox doesn't offer anything in way of link traffic, I wasn't sure which file was the culprit so I disabled all of them. At the moment, I consider this program abandoned.

I just can't install the application. The setup application says that it fails at validating the application and is unable to continue. Precisely, in my language: "Échec de la validation de l'application. Impossible de continuer".

I already tried some weeks ago without any more luck...

It should do that automatically when you install it. I never did get a chance to finish the file association options. I'll try to find some time in the near future to complete that.

Is it giving an error code / window? What version of Windows 8 or Vista? What language are you using. I need to know these things so I can help narrow down the issue.

The problem is in the error code you received. For some reason, the Deployment folder is not allowing access to the ClickOnce installer. It's something I've never come across and unfortunately can't offer much in the way of suggestions other than to make sure you have read / write access for that particular folder before trying to install 7zip Scenic.

What a pity that your program doesn't exists in 64-bit version! Compression/decompression programs are in one of the categories which have the more benefits of 64-bit performances.

However, I like the interface, well done.

I noticed that you use the Visual Studio embedded installer. It's not the best. I can create installers for your programs (in MSI or EXE format) if you want.

I would love to support 64bit but I simply cannot test it without a. going though the hassle of creating a VM or b. reinstalling Windows 7 (my processor is 64bit capable and I have a 64bit version of Windows 7 but didn't use it). I'm not up to doing either one of those things though. :D

Thank you for the offer but I think I'll stick with using ClickOnce for the installation. It's the easiest, quickest way to provide updates.

If you are 4 GB or more RAM, then I strongly recommend to switch to 64-bit Windows, because 32-bit version cannot use more than 3.5 GB.

VirtualBox can run 64-bit systems, but I don't know if it works on 32-bit hosts

No problem, do as you want.

There isn't anything code-wise that prevents this running on a 64bit system. My theory is you might be able to simply replace the 32bit version of 7zip.dll with the 64bit version. Having a look at the developer's page for SevenZipSharp, the wrapper I'm using for 7z, he states it should work perfectly fine on 64bit systems as long as you use the 64bit versions of the 7z library (7z.dll).

I'll have to look into it further as I would like to support a 64bit version but in the meantime I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd give the above suggestion a try. If it doesn't work, simply uninstall it. Let me know either way.

Moreover, 7zip cannot open my RAR files, it asks for a password which doesn't exists!

Strange, I just tried to open a .rar file myself and didn't have any issues with it. There was a problem in the update before last that caused a problem in regards to a 'Password needed' dialog but I fixed that in the last update. I'm pretty sure I pushed that update so if you don't mind, please try manually updating and see if the program is up to date.

Also, if the file you're trying to open is not of a sensitive manner, I'd love to see if it's just that single file that is causing the problem - perhaps a corruption of the file, etc.

Like any other program you want to uninstall. Go to Control Panel > Program and Features and uninstall from there.

Can I ask why you want to? Was there something you didn't like about it? Anything I could change to make it better?

i see, thanks:)

well, the program is beautiful but is starts and closes a little bit longer than the original 7-zip:)

i'm a speed-psycho and extreme comma-counter (2x7-zip in control panel: original one and yours!;p) so forgive me:)

i'll use your program if it will be faster and will be a real replacement for 7-zip instead of beautiful GUI "plugin" :)

i can't get it to associate with only .7z and .rar

after resetting the .zip default to windows whenever i double click 7zip it opens and says "was this deployed via clickonce?"

Did you create a shortcut to the 7zip program yourself or are you using the shortcut that the installer made? You shouldn't have to do anything to get it to associate with .7z, .zip and .rar files.

:iconcohenmatt:

i deleted the shortcut from my desktop (should be an option) same as install directory (should be an option)

the files did associate with zip but i reset to use explorer as default... .7z didn't associate bc it already was associated with official 7zip file manager

uninstall and reinstall doesn't change assoc. status and the settings tab with the extensions (file associations) button is greyed out

The reason you can't change the install directory is because it's using ClickOnce as the installation process. This provides me an easier way to push updates. The same goes for the shortcut on the desktop. You need to use that shortcut because of the way ClickOnce works. Read more about ClickOnce here if you have anymore questions about it: [link]

As for the file association I would suspect, as you've mentioned, since you have the official 7zip file manager installed first, Explorer is using that as the default for .7z files. If you highlight a .7z file, you should see in Explorer an 'Open' drop-down menu. Please let me know if there is a menu item named 'ClickOnce Application Deployment'. I wish I'd be able to change that to 7zip Scenic but until Microsoft change the way developers can utilize ClickOnce then that is unfortunately beyond my control.

Yeah, you're welcome I guess but I can guarantee you 100 percent you did receive any trojans from this program. There is quite simply zero code that is able capable of 'controlling your pc'. All this program does is compress and uncompress archives. That is all, full stop.

If you can indeed verify that this program some how infected your computer, I'd be greatly interested in that report because it simply cannot do that.

What anti-virus reported the problem? What were you doing when the report occurred? What was the anti-virus' finding? Which files were infected?

All these thing would help narrow down a cause and are far more helpful than 'thanks for the trojan'... Of the 1000+ downloads you're the only one to report such a problem so I have to question your behaviour moreso than the program.

How is saying you've got a trojan and that the program has taken over your computer saying 'thanks'? Saying that only makes other people think that this program will infect their computer with a virus or something. It just doesn't make any sense to say that kind of thing...
